Meet our swimmers: Lily

“Swimming has helped me immensely in my recovery and ability to feel ‘normal’ again. I feel like I belong at WeSwim.”

About Lily

Two years ago, Lily began experiencing issues with balance and coordination. She was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative condition Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).

“I had to reset everything my body could do, which took a lot of patience. I had to accept my fate—but I was determined to find positive ways to get my independence back.”

Finding WeSwim

A student in her Tai Chi class suggested WeSwim. Lily joined the Vauxhall Club in July 2024 and quickly began noticing a difference.

She said: “Right away I realised it was good for my movement. The more I went, the better and more confident I became in the water. I’m now able to float using a noodle, put my face in the water, and swim full lengths. Water is my best friend.”

For Lily, the social side of swimming has been just as valuable: “I’m not alone at the club and chatting to volunteers and other swimmers has improved my speech and boosted my confidence. Everyone’s so patient, helping when I struggle but also stepping back when I say no—so I can be independent.”
