Meet our swimmers: Yanita

Yanita

“WeSwim didn’t just teach me to swim. It helped me believe I could get active again and that has changed everything.”

About Yanita
My name is Yanita and I have Friedreich’s ataxia, a condition that affects my balance and coordination. As a progressive condition, it has gradually gotten harder to manage. After Covid, things got particularly tough, and I knew that getting active again was the only way to slow things down but figuring out how was a real challenge.

I searched online for swimming options that could accommodate my disability, but finding clear information about accessibility and one-to-one support was surprisingly difficult. When I finally came across WeSwim, I was genuinely excited, it was exactly what I had been looking for.

The Impact
I joined a bit more than a year ago, feeling nervous and in a bit of a slump with physical activity in general. I was scared to even get in the water at first. But the volunteers were patient, warm, and encouraging from day one and what’s made a real difference is that each volunteer challenges me in a different way, helping me grow in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve gone from being too nervous to get in the pool to genuinely looking forward to trying new things and pushing myself further.

The progress has been faster than I ever imagined when I joined last year. But the impact goes beyond swimming. My confidence has grown outside the pool too. In fact, a few months ago I signed up to a gym, something I honestly don’t think I would have done without the push that WeSwim gave me.
